Mariners remain undefeated on the season with ties at Douglas and Capilano
VIU women's soccer remains undefeated after two weekends of conference play, adding pair of ties at Douglas College and Capilano University to earlier wins over Langara College.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14: VIU 1 - Douglas 1
Cunnings Field - Town Centre Park, Coquitlam, B.C.
Ninety minutes between the top two teams in the PACWEST conference yielded a 1-1 draw between the Mariners and Royals.
The hometown Royals took a 1-0 lead into the half thanks to a 22nd-minute goal from Pak Tung Tsang but VIU struck back a minute into the second half. A hard shot from midfielder Emma Thornton was saved by the Douglas goalkeeper, but the ball bounced back into a sea of players. Maggie Thurbide tapped the ball back in front to Saki Meshida and she deposited the ball into the Douglas net.
Kaiden Thorpe earned the tie in the Mariners net and has a record of one win and one tie in two starts. She also played the final 45 in VIU's 2-0 win over Langara on September 8.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15: VIU 2 - Capilano 2
Lillooet Park, North Vancouver, B.C.
Box Score
The Mariners scored first and last on the natural grass pitch of Lillooet Park as VIU tied Capilano 2-2 in their first meeting of the season.
Emma Thornton, who has created all sorts of dangerous opportunities this season, took a pass from Courtney Ingram and split two defenders before scoring a 9th-minute opening goal--her first of the year.
Capilano answered right before the end of first half as Amelia Mori brought the Blues level and took the lead less than a minute into the second half thanks to an Alexis King goal. However, a Hannah-to-Hannah play resulted in a Mariners goal as a Hannah Rose corner kick was headed into the net at the far post by defender Hannah Wagner in the 62nd minute -- her first goal in VIU colours.

The Mariners kept the pressure up in the second half and earned four corner kicks to one for Capilano and out-shot the Blues 11-5 in the final 45. The Blues held steady and both teams took a point from the game. First-year goalkeeper Mckenna Brown earned the tie in the VIU net.
