Meet the team who works hard every day to make sure your child has an amazing summer experience.

Vanessa Stratton

campVIU Business Development Coordinator

Vanessa is an MBA graduate of Vancouver Island University with a Bachelor of Sport Management from Brock University. She is an advocate for well-rounded, strategic and high quality athlete and youth development opportunities. When not at work, Vanessa can be found on the ice as an international level hockey referee or at home hanging out with her dog, Forest.

On Summer Camps: “Summer camps here at VIU have the unique ability to bring a level of excitement to campus, provide opportunities for students to engage and give back to their community and, most importantly, provide an exceptional and fun experience for our campers.”

 

Isabella Kortbeek

campVIU Lead, Summer Leader

Isabella is graduating from VIU’s Tourism Management program and is a third-year leader for campVIU. She has an interest in program development and a passion for working with kids! In her spare time, Isabella enjoys hiking, swimming, and lacrosse.

On Summer Camp: “My favorite part of being involved in summer camps is the opportunity to create moments for campers to explore new environments and all the amazing conversations!”

VIU Varsity Teams

VIU Mariners Women’s Volleyball

The VIU Mariners Women’s Volleyball team has dominated the PACWEST and CCAA volleyball courts for the past three years. Led by head coach, Shane Hyde, the team secured back-to-back-to-back national championships in the 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.  This summer, VIU Women’s Volleyball looks forward to sharing their knowledge and passion for the sport with another amazing group at Mariners in Training camp!

VIU Mariners Men’s Basketball

The VIU Men’s Basketball team is excited to share their talents with aspiring athletes for another amazing summer of camps! Led by head coach, Matt Kuzminski, the team had a phenomenal 2018-19 season as the 2019 CCAA National Champions and continued that success into this past season by, once again, qualifying for the 2020 National Championship. This year they are offering three camps for players to work with the team and up their game.

VIU Mariners Women’s Basketball

The VIU Mariners Women’s Basketball team is having another great season achieving the title of PACWEST Champions and qualifying for the CCAA National Championship in 2019 and 2020. Camps are led by PACWEST and CCAA Coach of the Year, Tony Bryce. The team is excited to offer a versatile basketball camp this year.

VIU Mariners Men’s Volleyball

As the 2019 PACWEST Champions and 2019 CCAA Bronze Medalists, the VIU Men’s Volleyball Team is on track for another great season! This summer, the team is excited to share their skills and experiences with volleyball athletes of all abilities and interest levels. Learn from head coach, Dr. Abe Avender, and student-athletes during both Mariners in Training camps this summer!

VIU Mariners Dance Team

The VIU Mariners Dance Team was founded in 2013 and is a performance & competitive dance, stunt, spirit and cheer team. This student-ran team is dedicated to promoting community engagement, student success and school spirit. VIU Mariners Dance team has received multiple first place titles at competitions and showcases. The VIU Mariners Dance team is thrilled to be hosting two dance workshops this summer to work with kids and share their passion for this artistic sport.

 

VIU Mariners Hockey Team

After being formed only 4 years ago, The VIU Mariners Men’s Hockey team has made the finals every year since origin. The team continues to build and grow, recruiting players locally and across Canada. This summer, the team is excited to share their skills and experience with athletes from across Nanaimo. Learn from top talent players and goalies this summer during the Mariners in Training camp.
