Mariners earn a conference bronze on home court
NANAIMO - VIU shook off disappointment from not qualifying for a championship game on home court to complete their 2024-25 season with conference bronze medals.
After dropping a semifinal match with the eventual conference champions from Douglas College, the Mariners roared back in an Island Rivalry match with the Camosun Chargers. VIU took the bronze medal after a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-22) victory. Max McDonald was outstanding in the middle and was named VIU's player of the game a day after Colby Soolsma earned the same award in the semifinals. After the tournament, Mariners setter Owen Dyck was named a tournament all-star.
This marks the fourth conference medal in four years and the team has won conference medals in 11 of the past 13 seasons. The Mariners finished the regular season 14-6 and in second place in the conference.
Tournament champions from Douglas College and the silver medallists from College of the Rockies advanced to the 2025 CCAA Men's Volleyball National Champions in Niverville, Manitoba, March 5-8.
