The Mariners look to build towards a 2024-25 PACWEST title on home court
NANAIMO, B.C. - VIU men's volleyball starts the 2024-25 regular season by battling the Avalanche but hopes for a return to the peak of the PACWEST at home.
The PACWEST (Pacific Western Athletic Association) 2024-25 men's volleyball schedule, released today, features VIU starting the season on the road versus the College of The Rockies Avalanche in Cranbrook--an 850-kilometre drive each way--on October 18 and 19. The Mariners will face the Capilano Blues and their new head coach, Markiel Simpson, in VIU's home opening weekend on November 1 (8 p.m.) and November 2 (3 p.m.) at the VIU Gym.
The Mariners, defending conference champions, will play 20 matches, split evenly between home and road games versus Douglas College, Capilano University, Camosun College, College of the Rockies, and Columbia Bible College.

VIU has been named host of the 2024-25 PACWEST Volleyball Championships, a 'final four' tournament for the men's and women's brackets. All games will take place at the VIU Gym on February 21 and 22. The conference champion and runner-up (via a wildcard berth) will qualify for the 2025 CCAA Men's Volleyball National Championship, hosted by Providence University College in Niverville, Manitoba, March 5-8. This tournament will mark the first time a Manitoba school will host a CCAA championship since the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) rejoined the CCAA in 2019.
The Mariners have performed well on the national stage in recent years, earning CCAA bronze medals in 2024 and 2019 along with a fourth-place finish in 2023.
Schedule Notes
- Each team will play the other teams four times: twice at home and twice on the road.
- Home games: all Friday games begin at 8 p.m. and all Saturday games begin at 3 p.m. with the women's matchups starting at 6 p.m. and 1 p.m. One game day is on Thursday: an 8 p.m. start versus COTR on January 30.
- All games will be streamed live via SportsCanada.tv through each athletic department's YouTube page.
