VIU Soccer Athletes of the Week - September 28-29
Holy Goalies! Kaiden Thorpe and Cody Carter recognized for excellent play in Week #4
Congratulations to Kaiden Thorpe and Cody Carter: VIU soccer athletes of the week!
A massive matchup between the top two teams in the PACWEST went the way of the VIU Mariners thanks to Thorpe's two shutouts against the CCAA's #5 ranked team from Douglas College. With the Mariners scoring only one goal in each game, Thorpe had no margins for error. She made four saves on Saturday and six saves on Sunday in the face of considerable Douglas pressure. With the two victories, VIU took over top spot in the conference. Head coach Bobbie Taylor said that Thorpe had "a stellar weekend with her double-shutout." Thorpe was also named PACWEST women's soccer athlete of the week and a CCAA athlete of the week.
Carter has stood tall in the VIU net in his first year of varsity soccer. He continued his excellent play in two intense games versus Douglas College, making four saves on Saturday—holding the fort until the Mariners scored a late equalizer—and five on Sunday. Carter has only allowed two goals over his past four games, allowing the Mariners to earn valuable points in three of those games and hold down a playoff spot with four games remaining.
"Cody has become crucial on our back line and has been a huge presence," head coach Kevin Lindo said. "He is a big reason we've tightened up our defence over the last few weekends."
