CCAA Female Apprentice Coach Program: Gromme joins Women's Basketball Coaching Staff
Kayla Gromme enters her second year as an apprentice coach under the CCAA's Female Apprentice Coach Program
NANAIMO - Kayla Gromme, a fierce on-court competitor with VIU women's basketball, has been given the opportunity to share her experience and knowledge with this year's squad from behind the bench.
On July 20, Gromme was named as one of 20 student-athletes from across Canada to participate in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association's (CCAA) Female Apprentice Coach Program (FACP) during the 2022-23 season.
In a media release, the CCAA noted that the FACP receives funding from Sport Canada and "is designed to identify and support female graduating student-athletes who demonstrate the desire and skills for coaching by providing them opportunities to grow through the coaching experience in CCAA varsity sports."
This will be her second year in the program. Gromme served as an assistant coach with VIU men's basketball and head coach Matt Kuzminski in 2021-22. In that season, the team won a PACWEST provincial championship and finished in fourth place in the CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship.
Gromme started her Mariners career with a bang. In 2009-10, she was named conference rookie of the year, conference 1st Team All-Star, and a conference championship all-star. Gromme was also named a conference 1st Team All-Star in 2010-11 and 2011-12.
She returned for her fourth season in 2019-20 and helped the Mariners to a PACWEST championship. Gromme has earned four PACWEST medals: bronze (2010), silver (2012), and gold (2020) as a student-athlete to go with her gold (2021) as an assistant coach.
The 2022-23 PACWEST basketball season tips off in November and the full schedule will be released later this summer.
