The Mariners welcome the College of the Rockies Avalanche to kick off the 2023-24 season
NANAIMO, BC - The VIU Mariners volleyball teams take the VIU gym court for the first time in the 2023-24 season on Thursday, October 19th versus the College of the Rockies Avalanche (Cranbrook, B.C.).
The VIU women feature some high-profile graduations in Jane Lytvynenko, Kayla Passmore, and Cassidy Kitchen. However, a number of PACWEST transfers including Emma Schill (Douglas Royals), Grace Brisebois (Capilano Blues), and Paige VanDellen (CBC Bearcats) will look to bolster the VIU lineup along with some high-profile high school and out-of-province recruits.
For the men, all-stars Lucas Torres and Daniel Mascarenhas are back to lead the VIU attack along with setter Owen Dyck. The team's squad of first-year student-athletes brings plenty of height to the team, including 6'7" Sem van Duist, 6'7" J.J. Horst, and 6'9" Calvin Vanderkooi, all from Nanaimo.
Games begin at 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men. The VIU Students' Union is running a tailgate party from 4-6 p.m. beside the gym. Admission is free for VIU students.
Fans can also tune in live at PACWEST.TV and Youtube: Women's game & Men's game.
Rematches will also take place at the VIU Gym on Friday, October 20. Game times are also 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
