Mariners recognize 5th-year guard Chloe Scaber on February 2nd before a big weekend set against the CBC Bearcats
NANAIMO - Before tipping off to a big weekend set of games versus the CBC Bearcats--hot on the Mariners heels in the standings--Mariners women's basketball will recognize it's sole graduating student-athlete, Chloe Scaber.
Scaber, a fifth-year guard who played two years down-Island with the Camosun Chargers before transferring to VIU, is the only student-athlete on the roster to complete her varsity eligibility this season. In her two years with VIU, her teams have earned PACWEST and CCAA golds and silvers, and Scaber was named Mariners player of the game in VIU's gold medal win at the 2023 CCAA national championship.
Fans are asked to be in their seats prior to 5:45 p.m. for the recognition ceremony. The game will begin shortly after.
NEED TO KNOW
VIU (14-4, 1st PACWEST) vs Columbia Bible College (11-7, 3rd PACWEST)
Friday, February 2 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, February 3 at 1 p.m.
The resurgent Bearcats have been one of the conference's biggest stories of 2023-24 and they are still in the mix for a top-two position in the conference, which leads to a first round bye at the PACWEST provincial championships.
In November, the Mariners squeaked out two two-point victories at CBC, 76-74 and 60-58. The Bearcats are on a four-game winning streak while the Mariners ended a 2024 four-game losing streak last weekend with a two-game sweep of the Okanagan Coyotes.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
CBC: Elissa Vreugdenhil has been a force; she leads the conference in rebounding by a wide margin and is second in points-per-game (16.56). Japanese teammate Kagari Tomita is third in points-per-game (15.61) and third in assists per game (4.11).
VIU: Kiarya Hohlweg was VIU's athlete of the week last week as her efforts included a double-double (10 points & 10 rebounds) against Okanagan College. Makayla Kimble sits fourth in PACWEST scoring with 13.39 points per game.
