Men's Basketball: Three Signings
A trio of Island athletes are set to join the Mariners for 2022-23
NANAIMO - The 2022-23 VIU men's basketball recruiting class includes three talented athletes from Vancouver Island.
Wyatt Brandsema-Stokes
Point Guard
Victoria, BC
Brandsema-Stokes was a key contributor for an excellent Lambrick Park Lions team. In their 2022 BC AA playoff run, the Lions earned a provincial silver medal with Brandsema-Stokes scoring a game-high 29 points in the championship game. He was named a tournament 1st Team All-Star, improving on his 2nd-team All-Star nod at the 2020 BC Junior Boys tournament.
Coach's Comment: VIU Head Coach Matt Kuzminski
"Wyatt is a strong and physical guard who excels at attacking the paint. He is a competitor and winner who will improve our depth immediately."
Ryan Bastian
Guard
Ladysmith, BC
Bastian is a talented guard who helped the Ladysmith Secondary 49ers qualify for the 2020 BC AAA senior boys basketball championship. At the Vancouver Island Zone Tournament, Bastian was named as a tournament 1st Team All-Star and earned the Best Defensive Player award.

"I have known Ryan since I coached him in 7th grade. He is a great teammate and a smart player who knows how to contribute to winning."
Markus Modrovic
Wing
Victoria, BC

Modrovic comes to VIU after a year at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. His BC high school career with the Belmont Bulldogs includes a 1st Team All-Star spot at the 2018 BC Junior Boys Tournament and a 2nd Team All-Star nod at the 2020 AAAA Vancouver Island Senior Boys basketball championship.
Coach's Comment
"Markus will provide us with offensive and defensive versatility that should immediately impact our team. He will complement our returning players well."
