WOMEN'S SOCCER
Saturday VIU 4- Langara 2
"After a slow start, our first goal really settled us down.
Langara surprised us coming out and pressing, they had a good setup so we had to be patient.
Chloe showed composer and the killer instinct when we needed it, she's having a great season!
Second half we changed things around and everyone had some success out there.
A few individual errors led to the goals which is disappointing but will help us learn and improve." comments Kevin Lindo, Head Coach
Sunday VIU 2- Langara 1
"Once again langara provided us with some issues as they found confidence in their shape.
They almost took the lead but this season we have been tough to break down and the group find ways to make overcome tough periods of the game.
A change of system definitely challenged the players and I was happy how we bounced back after Langara tied it up.
Not our best game but we're delighted with the weekend overall." remarks Kevin Lindo
MEN'S SOCCER
Saturday VIU 3 - Langara 1
Langara came out strong and took the lead 1-0 in the 39th minute on a header from a free kick. The turning point in the game was a brilliant penalty kick save in the 70th minute by VIU keeper Kevin Picard. This gave the Mariners the momentum in the second half as they controlled the play. Shun Takano equalized in the 76th minute before Billy Bagiopoulos scored the winner in the 79th minute. Takano added the clinching goal in the 88th minute for seal the win for VIU.
"I thought we started very slow today in the first half, but full credit to our guys we stuck with the game plan and had an excellent second half and scored some quality goals in a short period of time." Comments Head Coach Larry Stefanek
Sunday VIU 4 - Langara 1
The first half was a different story from Saturday's first half as VIU scored early in the 7th minute off an excellent header from Michael Heppelle. The Mariners were unfortunate to not go ahead more as the Langara keeper made a couple of good saves in the first half, score was 1-0 VIU at the break. Early in the second half Micheal Heppelle scored his second of the game in the 48th minute to give the Mariners a two goal cushion. Billy Bagiopoulos scored a superb third goal before Karson Kroetsch added a late fourth for the VIU win. Langara broke Kevin Picard's shutout with a late 90th minute goal. I liked our energy in the first 20 minutes and the key for us was to get that early goal. Lots of good performances today, we defended very well as a team and limited their scoring opportunities.
"I thought we dominated the second half and scored some fantastic goals to secure the win. An excellent weekend for us." says Coach Stefanek
