VIU Mariners Women's Basketball program launches Training Centre for young females
Mariners excited at this new venture that will benefit local female basketball community.
Coming this fall will be the inaugural launch of the VIU Women's Basketball Training Centre. Hosted by PACWEST Women's Coach of the Year and former CCAA National Coach of the Year, Tony Bryce. The Training Centre will be open to young females ages 12-18 that are willing to learn, compete and grow.
"We are so excited to build the VIU Mariners WBB family!" Bryce said. "While skill development will be an integral part of the VIU Girls training centre, players will also feel the passion, care, and love of the game. All proceeds from the centre will go right back into growing the girls game, and providing further opportunities for future generations."
Joining Bryce will be his Mariners coaching staff and student-athletes, along with special guest coaches. The Training Centre will focus on individual skill development building into team play concepts. Additionally focus will be on 1 on 1 situations, 3 on 3 FIBA play, and 5 on 5 action. All proceeds from the program will go towards supporting the Mariners Women's Basketball program.
Mariners Athletics and Recreation are excited to see a team initiative like this that has the ability to help support their program, but also, give back to the community.
"This initiative builds upon the strong community connection the Mariners have with the Nanaimo and mid-island basketball community" said Stephanie White, VIU's Director of High Performance Sports, Recreation and Physical Literacy. "The Training Centre provides an opportunity for young basketball athletes to learn from a PACWEST Coach of the Year as well as incredible role models in our Mariners student-athletes."
