Mariners welcome the Blues and aim to shake off a three-game losing streak
NANAIMO, B.C. - The Mariners know they are going to the provincial championships, but would rather head in on a winning streak. The team looks to get momentum back on their side with two games at home against the Capilano Blues.
VIU Mariners (10-6) vs Capilano Blues (2-14) - VIU Gym
- Friday, February 9 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Febrary 10 at 3 p.m.

- Previous games: VIU defeated Capilano 3-1 (25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 25-20) and 3-2 (25-22, 26-24, 19-25, 18-25, 15-13) back in November
AT STAKE
All of the Mariners six losses this year have come in two three-game losing streaks: October 20-28, 2023 and the team's last three games: one at COTR and two at Camosun. VIU is currently tied with Camosun at 10-6 for second place and Douglas College is only two points behind at 9-9. One of VIU, Camosun, and Douglas will finish fourth and face the top-ranked COTR Avalanche in the PACWEST playoffs; the other two teams will face off against each other.
Capilano is 1-5 in the spring semester and dropped two 3-0 decisions to Douglas College last weekend.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
- VIU: Daniel Mascarenhas is all over the PACWEST leaderboard: third in total offense (3.81), sixth in kills per set (2.59), first in blocks per set (0.83), and seventh in aces per set (0.39).
- Capilano: German Marco Kost is second in the PACWEST in aces per set (0.69). Former Mariner Dario Pereira is fourth in total offense (3.69) and third in kills per set (3.12).
