VIU Statement: Inclusivity in sports is a shared responsibility

Vancouver Island University (VIU) is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in both our academic and athletic programs. We firmly believe that these values strengthen our campus community and enhance our student-athletes' sense of belonging.  

On October 25, an incident involving the coaching staff from Columbia Bible College (CBC) occurred, which we believe contravened the Coaches Code of Ethics. A formal complaint was submitted to the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST), initiating an investigation by the association, which is ongoing.   

In response, and after carefully considering the concerns raised by our student-athletes and coaching staff, the VIU Mariners Women's Basketball team will not participate in the upcoming regular season games scheduled this weekend against CBC. VIU has formally requested an exemption from these games without penalty, given the ongoing investigation and the sensitive nature of the situation. 

VIU stands in full support of our student-athletes and affirms the right of all athletes to compete in an environment that prioritizes their safety and well-being.  

VIU strictly adheres to the rules and regulations established by PACWEST and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), including the CCAA's policy on transgender student-athlete participation. In light of PACWEST's statement on student-athlete participation issued on November 1, we urge the association to address this matter with the diligence, care, and leadership necessary to uphold its standards. 

Intimidation, harassment, and discrimination have no place in athletics. We trust PACWEST to uphold its principles and prioritize the safety and inclusion of all participants in collegiate sports. We believe this is a shared responsibility and call on PACWEST to fulfill its role in advancing this effort.
