Women's Volleyball Announcement
Jacey Neid and Ava Wagner sign with VIU Mariners
Vancouver Island University Mariners Women's Volleyball team is excited to announce two major signings for the 2021/22 season. The cancellation of the 2020/21 PACWEST and CCAA season has put the three-time consecutive National Champions on hold, but the work to improve does not stop! With key pieces in place and the addition of two very talented athletes, the Mariners will be poised to defend their title next season.
The first player to sign with the Mariners is Ava Wagner. Ava is currently attending Centennial Collegiate High School in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Ava is a 6-foot setter who runs a very smooth offense. She is a talented athlete who makes smart decisions on the court. She is a member of the 18U Premier Huskie's Volleyball Club and was a member of the 2019 Saskatchewan Provincial team. She is currently part of the Team Saskatchewan Canada Games training group. Ava is a dynamic multisport athlete. Outside of volleyball, she has excelled at high level hockey, track and field and basketball. "We are very pleased to have Ava join the Mariner program. She is an elite high school/club setter who will make immediate contributions to our team. I feel that the combination of Ava and our current setter, Linnea Brickwood, will solidify our offence and could be one of the top setting combos in the league," remarked Coach Hyde.
The second player to join the Mariners next season is Jacey Neid. Jacey is no stranger to the Mariner players and coaches. She has spent the past two seasons with rival, Douglas Collage Royals, but has made the move to VIU to complete her studies in Education. During her time at Douglas she was one of their top players. Jacey is a very explosive offensive player. She is a 6- foot, left-handed, outside hitter who has experience and the ability to end rallies. "We are very fortunate to have a player of Jacey's ability come join us at VIU. Jacey comes from a very good program. She is well coached and has been an elite player on an elite team for her entire post-secondary career. The fact that we have had so many great matchups against her and her former Douglas team allows us to know what type of player we are getting. She was always a player we keyed on during matches and we are so excited to have her join us verses try and find ways to stop her." Explained Hyde
